Hildesheim certainly put on its fancy pants in preparation for its 1200th birthday in 2015. It's hard to believe that Hildesheim was razed by bombing on 22 March 1945 and that its pretty, medieval-looking 'Altstadt' is a post-WWII reconstruction. There are three Unesco World Heritage sites in the Hildesheim area and history buffs will find it worth considering an overnight stop here. If you're visiting Hanover for a trade fair and find no rooms in the capital, Hildesheim makes an excellent alternative base with some decent modern hotels.
