Located north of the Harz mountain range on the navigable boundary of the Oker river, which connects with the North Sea through the Aller and Weser rivers. A powerful and influential center of commerce in the medieval period in Germany, Braunschweig was a member of the Hanseatic League from the thirteenth century to the seventeenth century, and the state capital of Brunswick until its abolition in 1946.
