Roses Spain

Roses is a municipality located on the Costa Brava, in Catalonia, situated on the coast at the northern end of the Gulf of Roses, and is an important fishing port and tourist center. This town in the province of Girona offers a multitude of beaches and coves among rocky cliffs, where visitors can practice a great variety of water sports in the Mediterranean Sea as well as walking in the nearby Aiguamolls de l´Empordá and in the natural parks of Cap de Creu. MAIN TOURIST ATTRACTIONS Citadel of Roses Located beside the bay of the same name, the citadel of Roses is an imposing military fortification which contains on its interior a succession of the ancient settlements to which Roses was home in the past. The fortress is a Renaissance work dating from the middle of 16th century, which was reformed both for the purpose of extending and reinforcing it in the two subsequent centuries on the orders of King Charles I of Spain. It is a star-shaped pentagonal walled enclosure with triangular bastions reinforced at the points, built using a system of banks, and has two main gateways to the Sea and Land gateways. Cap de Creus Natural Park In the north of the Costa Brava you’ll find the Cap de Creus Natural Park that contains a wild coastline with its vertiginous cliffs and hidden coves, and with islets scattered all along it and a capriciously shaped rocks, sculpted by the wind and the erosion of the sea. It is a biological paradise of forests and meadows that you can explore on endless excursions, stopping off in the peaceful town of Llançà. The City Center Stroll along the narrow, uneven, streets in the center round the church. They all run parallel to the sea and are full of restaurants and small shops where you can enjoy the Mediterranean atmosphere. In the Plaça de Catalunya you will find examples of Modernist architecture, like the Casa Mallol, which is the present town Hall. Between Trinitat and Escorxadors streets you will find Plaça de la Pau, which is dedicated to the historical memory of the spanish Civil War. The remodelling of the area, which consists of a sculpture by artist Ció Abellí, was inaugurated in 2006. The sculpture reflects on the irrationality of war and the value of life.
